ALIEN AWESOMENESS !!!

Let me start off by saying this is the first review I have ever written. I don't want to write a book or anything, but I would like to try and help some people looking at this laptop. First we bought this computer mostly for my son. He is slowly becoming a gamer and does robotic programming. We wanted to buy a computer that was upgradeable but powerfull with its own stand alone specs . We looked for about 2 months . Looked at the Toshiba Qosmio, Asus G750 and Msi. All seemingly worthy of purchase. But after agonizing for two months we decided on this particular alienware model. This computer is everything we thought it would be and more. First I will talk about the packaging. The packaging could have been a little better. The Amazon box was damaged on one end and the AW box inside had a minor ding on the same end . Looks like loose industrial paper wrap could be upgraded to something more substantial. But there was no damage to the laptop. We received the shipment as promised within a few days of ordering. Great service! Now to the computer. The start up is quick and easy. The first thing we did was check the internal specs of computer and everything checked out as listed except one minor bit of wireless info, this model comes with 802.11 ac instead of the 802.11 bgn which we thought was a bonus. We were pleasently surprised at how clear the display was for an anti-glare screen. We have always had glass type screens so we were a bit leary but this is much more easy on the eyes. This being our first gaming type of laptop we were concerned about the overheating nature of these type of laptops but we have not experienced that type of heat from this computer. The ventilation on this is excellent, the center of the keyboard gets slightly warm after about an hour and fifteen mins. The fans are hardly noticeable and are very quiet compared to what we had. We are just getting started with the gaming but my son said their is no lag on what he has played so far, mostly Minecraft and StarTrek online gaming. This laptop is one of the most stoutly built designs I have ever seen. It is very solid, and looks wonderfull or bad ass whichever you prefer. The battery charger is a bit on the big side but at 240 hrz it has to be. But oddly enough its not very heavy.and has rubber slip pads on the bottom corners to prevent slippage on your desktop. I read that someone wanted to know if this model had a webcam. It does have one but haven't had a chance to use it yet. We have a friend that has a computer repair business to look our new laptop and was nice enough to check the cpu performance levels and said that it had peak performance standards and told us it was a good buy. We are very pleased with this laptop purchase and hope it lasts several years. Thanks Amazon !!! I thought I should mention that we did purchase a laptop cooler just in case. But we hardly use it. but doesn't hurt to protect your puchase. fyi, it was a Cooler Master Note Pal U3 model. Fits it perfectly.

Now I see why Alienware is so great!

Update: My budget conscience kicked in and I returned the laptop for a different one. Better spec'ed and everything. This is a still a good laptop and I would have kept it if I wasn't so budget conscience. I can still answer most questions one may have so don't hesitate to ask. As for my review, it still stands.

First off I wish to state, I was an Alienware hater. I only bought this one as I was having bad luck finding a laptop I was happy with and this one was clearanced out at a local store. I ALWAYS went with a "lesser" brand. Asus, Toshiba, Samsung. As they were priced lower for the same specs. But now...

I just got this model from a different retailer that was local to me. And boy am I impressed! For comparison I will list my previous laptop:

Now, I will list comparisons:

-The Samsung is more flimsy, the screen wobbles more and the entire chassis just seems more flimsy. The Alienware is lighter but more sturdy, thanks to the magnesium alloy framework and aluminum outer body. The screen doesn't wobble, the keyboard has no flex, or if it does I don't feel it.

-The Samsung is fairly closed up. 1 screw and you can slide off a bottom panel which allows access to the 2 bottom sticks of ram, and the hard drives and optical drive. The Alienware on the other hand you remove 2 screws and the ENTIRE bottom slides off! You can access the bottom 2 ram slots, the HDD's, optical drive and what a concept, everything else, easier to clean the fans on and everything! Heck you can even replace most of the components yourself as the Owners Manual has a full step by step guide on replacing EVERYTHING! (Of course while in warranty I'll let them worry about it.) But it's nice to know that for the future when out of warranty I can replace core components much easier.

-The Samsung has a 120Hz display and the Alienware doesn't (it's only a 60Hz) but I honestly can't tell the difference, so while spec wise the Samsung wins this one, for my personal tastes, the Alienware is perfectly fine.

-It is unfair to compare last years specs to this years specs, but suffice it to say, it was an upgrade. But this one I won't label any winner as it would be one sided with the Alienware winning in about all categories. But it's also comparing Apples to Oranges.

-Samsung is a little fatter at it's fattest point (Rear). But is thinner at it's thinnest point (Front). The Alienware is pretty much uniform from front to back. Believe it or not though, the Alienware fits much better than the Samsung in my bag. The Alienware just slides right in!

-Samsung Power brick is thicker, but smaller in the width and length than the Alienware. The Alienware power brick looks like a giant sat on the Samsung one and squished it some! But it does help make the bag not be as thick. Thus allowing a little more ease of zipping the bag up.

-Samsung wins in optical drive department as it came with a Blu-ray drive stock and the Alienware doesn't. Nothing that buying an external won't fix (or ordering an internal and upgrading yourself) I already had an external Blu-Ray drive for another laptop I no longer have so I'm not bothered by this, but it may bother others.

-Samsung also may seem to win in the HDD department as it has 2x Seagate 750GB 7,200RPM HDD's. But if I wanted for about $80 more I could have bought a 1TB 7,200RPM HDD for more capacity. Instead I went with a Samsung EVO 250GB SSD for boot and turned the included 750GB into the data drive. Another note, if your welling to pull the Alienware apart almost all the way, underneath the keyboard is an Msata slot for an SSD, so you could have a Msata SSD and dual HDD's in the Alienware. The Alienware also has built-in RAID. So while the Samsung may give you more HDD space upfront, most likely your be putting in an SSD like I did on both machines. (Samsung has an OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD in it.) Also with Alienware's capability of over time going to Dual HDD's and an Msata SSD, in the longer run the Alienware wins. (I could have say a 250GB Msata SSD and 2x 1TB HDD's for over 2TB of data and a ultra fast boot drive in the Alienware. So the Alienware wins this one in my books.

-Alienware wins customization, as you can customize the lighting in 10 different zones: Numberpad, 3 zones in the main keyboard, the touchpad is backlit, the Alienware name under the LCD lights up. There is 2 bars and the Alien head that lights up on the lid of the LCD display, and there are 2 bars that wrap around from the side to front that can be colored. The lid is one whole channel and side/ front lights is 1 whole channel. Plus the Power LED (1 channell) and HDD, Wifi and Caps lock leds (shared channel) can be customized. The power LED can be fixed to use one color for when it's plugged in and a completely different color when not plugged in and operating off battery.

-It is a tie in sound as the Samsung has a little more bass, thanks to the dedicated subwoofer, but the Alienware can get far louder and fill a large room with sound fairly easily and without much distortion. Though it does lack some of the bass, but not all the bass. I am hard of hearing an am finding that about 40% volume is decent on the Alienware, whereas I would need about 60-70% on the Samsung. I am planning on buying a bluetooth speaker system to help with the bass. I found a decent one that will do bass really well while not taking up too much space.

-The Alienware also has 4 macro keys that you can map to different functions and keystrokes, the Samsung doesn't..

-The Alienware has far better cooling than the Samsung, with practically the entire back half of the bottom being vents. The gpu gets fan AND passive cooling thanks to the vents over the gpu heatpipes. So it gets double cooling when you have a cooling pad.

-Temps wise, The Samsung would need to be lifted about an inch (at max) to get decent airflow. The Alienware doesn't need this and really doesn't need a cooling pad, though I did buy a Coolermaster Notepal U3 to help out on the hot days or such.

-Reliability, is something I will have to review later. And I will in a few months. But the Samsung needed to be sent in twice! Not once but twice in the year I've had it for repair and I have had nothing but issues when it came to hardware reliability on the Samsung. About 3 months into ownership on the Samsung it had to be sent in, then about 2 months after getting it back it had to be sent in again. Both times where for faulty hard ware. (Cpu first, then the GPU second). (This could have very well been a lemon, but it ruined it for me.) I spend a lot of money on something I expect it to break much later on in life. I hold this standard on all high ticket items. So the Alienware is and will be held to this regard as well.

All in all I am extremely impressed. The Alienware was designed for power users. You have full access to the components. Heck even the User's guide has a guide for all that! The build quality really seems to be there. Looking back, none of my other machines ever where this sturdy. You can also see it when you remove the bottom. Overall I am really impressed and have been converted from a hater to someone who will really, really consider an Alienware in the future. But this also depends on how reliable this machine is over the course of the year/s.

Very powerful laptop.

I have had my GT60-2OD for about a week now. And it's been awesome. The keyboard is a pleasure to type on, the backlight and effects are very nice as well, and also as I read somewhere they did add a matte screen bezel for this generation so no distracting reflections while using your new laptop!

I have it set on a coolermaster pad made for 17" laptops, given that the screen bezel is pretty wide. Also, the laptop fits nicely inside the pad when transporting it or for storage. The cooling pad is mostly for elevation, but it does help ease the airflow around the system. Without it the temps are a little higher due to the fan intake/exhaust vents recycling some of the hot air that bounces of the wooden table which is very insulating and gets quite hot. Perhaps glass or metal tables are easier on the temps. I haven't been using the cooling pad fans, as I don't really think they would make much of a difference as the laptop is ventilated by the sides and not bottom, but I'm sure they could improve the temps by a few degrees.

I did have some modifications done to the laptop. The thermal paste replaced with IC Diamond 24 by Gentech PC and I also had 3 mSSDs installed and set to RAID 0 to get a bigger SSD C: Drive. Also, as a bonus I got my RAM upgraded to 24 gigs.

With the turbo fan on (from the touch bar controls) and ambient temps around 24 C neither the CPU nor the GPU ever go much above 80 C with heavy gaming for hours at ultra settings on the ARMA 3 Alpha which runs at around 45 FPS with default ULTRA settings. A little reduction on draw distances and reduction of MSAA to 4x instead of 8x brought it up to 50 FPS. This with no overclocking or any kind of fiddling or any other settings changed. I'm sure that both the CPU and GPU are capable of a little more, but I haven't been there yet. The only that I did was to use the new feature MSI put in place, which uses some of the battery power to complement the supply when the 180W from the AC adapter aren't enough. It's called hybrid power and to use it you just need to open the program and press OK.

But if you keep your factory thermal paste job, you might get higher temps than I did and maybe slightly slower FPS because of the system protecting itself from overheating. Some users on forums reported that some of the paste jobs were sloppy and that MSI used too much pasted and that some systems were overheating. So you may want to look into that, specially if you think your system is running too hot.

Switching between GPU's is quite easy, to force Windows to use the Intel integrated GPU isntead of the 780m all the time you have to go to Nvidia Control panel/3d Settings/ and change your global settings to the integrated GPU and then restart the PC. This way your GPU light will remain white. Then, manually choose games and other programs that you want using the Nvidia GPU from that same menu. Light code: White=Intel HD4600 Orange=NVIDIA 780m

I haven't done thorough battery tests, but as with any laptop I'm sure it greatly depends on the use. Maybe a little over an hour of gaming and perhaps 10 hours with devices turned off, minimum brightness and just light browsing and some video watching using the integrated GPU only. These numbers are invented and not any real representation. I will try to get some accurate numbers after I do some testing.

There are some annoying quirks. Whenever I plug my G700 mouse (haven't tried any other mice) the computer auto disables the touchpad. And I have to go FN+F3 to enable again. The touchpad is really nice when typing and you need to do something with the cursor quickly, not so much if it's disabled. Apparently some of the Synaptics software does this and is somewhat complicated to fix as there is no toggle setting available natively. Maybe new drivers will have that feature, but with the ones you get out of the box your touchpad will be automatically disabled when another mouse input is connected. After searching on some forums someone pointed out to me this fix

"Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached" option in the synaptics control panel, open regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh, right click and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it "DisableIntPDFeature". "Modify it's value to 33 in hexadecimal, or 51 in decimal to enable it to be default on." I haven't tried it yet myself. But I might try to do it soon.

I was unlucky enough to get a noisy fan when it is idling, it sound like toy car gears or perhaps a bad bearing. But a quick e-mail to my reseller and a few arrangements with MSI got me a new one coming in the mail. Which I will change myself. Since my warranty sticker had already been broken it's not an issue. Yet, you should contact MSI and ask about implications of breaking your warranty sticker. The consensus is that as long as you don't actually damage anything there shouldn't be a problem, yet I recommend contacting MSI yourself. You need to break it to upgrade your RAM with the 2 slots that are available upon opening the laptop (the other 2 are under the keyboard)

I have been thinking about doing two things to improve the aesthetics of the notebook. And that is

1)Removing the stickers, or at least just the Specs and MSI gaming series and maybe even the Sound Blaster one. The Intel and Nvidia one are fine. Since the handrest is made of aluminum, I would think that any glue residue would be easily removed with alcohol, lighter fluid or some other light solvent. This may decrease the resale value of the laptop later on, so it's a very personal call.

2)Coming from the MSI GX60, I always hated the shiny screen bezel, yet I loved the chrome MSI logo. In the GT60 I love the matte bezel but the painted MSI logo on the bezel looks very cheap and detracts from the High-end look of the notebook. I ordered a pair or metal stickers from China that I found on eaby. They will get here in about 20 days, so we'll see about that. I know that I might have to modify things a little bit. The foremost reason I think MSI chose to do this is since the bezel is matte, the stickers wouldn't play so nice with that surface. Let's see what happens. I got a 2 pack, so I have a little slack there.

As a footnote, I have been looking for good cases to keep and carry the laptop around. I haven't yet found a neoprene skin that would fit the laptop, it is bigger than a standard 15.6 incher and also thicker, but not as big as a 17 incher. I haven't yet found one but I'll keep looking. As for the case, after a lot of research I found a nice case that I think looks amazing, has a good price and offers good protection. The Condor 3-Way laptop case available here on Amazon seems to fit this laptop nicely. It seems to have a large enough pocket for the Power supply brick and has good padding and restraint all the way around. I'll post an update once I get it to see how well it fits.

To wrap it up, I read on the owners forum for this laptop over at notebookreview that to get the warranty from MSI you have to complete the online form and then print and mail something back to them (through snail mail) to get the full warranty. I haven't done it yet and I suggest you look up some information. I will try to keep this review updated with any new developments.

Like a new model car, very nice and full of issues.

Sadly I bought this from a popular website starting with an N and ending in G which I will never use again. I purchased there only because Amazon themselves don't have this in stock yet. BIG MISTAKE as getting an RMA has been a nightmare.

The laptop has great hardware for gaming, great sound, a good screen, fantastic keyboard. Scored 7700 on 3Dmark 11 P out of the box.

Mine has a bad issue with the fan, it sounds like a locust is stuck inside my comp. The thing rattles at idle and whines at load, like a bad bearing or similar to coil whine. The disc drive also only works sometimes. My ssd drive changes its free space available after every restart despite setting a fixed mem allocation. It will go from anywhere between 68gb and 76gb. HEAT is bad, the CPU idles at about 65C and load up to 100C unless I turn on turbo fan. The GPU goes up to 91C at load.

If I could get a refund I would but I'm stuck as they won't give one to me without paying 15% restocking. It was like pulling teeth to get a return label and my replacement isn't even guaranteed. If you buy this get it here. I hope Someday Amazon will put these places with terrible customer arrive out of business.

Pretty solid, but room for improvement

Received mine earlier today and have been install, browsing and gaming for six hours.

Initial impression:
Unboxing the laptop, the overall weight of the unit and power adapter is fairly substantial. This makes a good desktop replacement, but I could not see myself carrying this daily. Overall, the construction is fairly good, but there are some short comings. The hotkeys near the top creak and are not sturdy towards the center, the laptop screen has a decent amount of flex and the same for the bottom half. The unit just does not feel as solid as the HP Elitebooks that I've owned in the past for example.

I also am not a fan of the trackpad buttons. They take a considerable amount of force to click and really force you to use the outer edges. For some reason, the buttons are a single piece which adds to the frustration. The keyboard is decent and the variable color back lighting is a nice touch.

Turning the laptop on, it greats you with the typical Windows 8 setup. There is not a lot of pre-installed applications, though I did end up removing a handful. Fortunately, the Norton software was straight forward to remove along with the other software. From there, it was easy to get online and start installing my common applications like Chrome, Steam, Avast and so on.

Gaming:
Since this is a laptop built around the fastest single mobile graphics card (780m) that was my next stop. The first game I fired up was Skyrim along with the HD texture pack and a few other visual upgrades. Due to Optimus, the installers recommends very low settings, but I set them to Ultra to start. The majority of indoor zones and towns play without a hitch at Ultra. However, out in the open world there was a considerable amount of stuttering at various times. It will take some more tweaking to find the optimal settings as well as trying other games like Crysis 3 and so on.

Summary:
While I've only had a short time with the laptop, I'm happy with the value. This makes a good portable gaming pc gaming system, but I will keep my ultrabook for mobile computing.

Awsome definietly worth it.

Great product, great shipping, fast service. definitely worth the price, it is worth 1500 and I got it on sale for $1200! Must Read! Don't overspend on an Alienware!

Disclaimer: This review is on the similar Asus G750JW from Best Buy. The difference between this one on Amazon and the one from best buy is the warranty and memory.

-About me
I am a full time grad student. I use my system for course work and entertainment. The Asus G750 meets those needs. I have given this system five star and would have given it four in a half if I could. Most of my review will compare to Alienware given that I believe they are subjectively the set standard for gaming laptops and I returned one for this Asus.

-Display:
The display has great viewing angles. If you check out Asus's website, they state it has a 140 degree viewing angle. The Alienware has an upgrade panel of 1080p with IPS technology. This is relevant because IPS is known for it's great viewing angles while the TN panels such as the one in the Asus aren't. However, TN panels have quicker response time and are better for gaming in my opinion. The Asus screen produces rich and Vibrant colors. Also, the TN panel in the Asus has great viewing angles countering the stereotype of poor viewing angles. While not an IPS, it will more than suffice for gaming. IPS panels are also prone to light bleed in which light from behind the panel can be seen above the screen on occasion. TN panel don't typically have this issue. My Alienware had light bleed and I could not tolerate it. Thank goodness I had this Asus as an alternative system.

-Speakers/Sound
The audio is ok. The Alieware I had sounded slightly better. The speakers in this system sound slightly hollow, but the subwoofer does help offset this. I have not played around with the audio settings yet, which may help out. Also worth mentioning is that this headphone jack in this system has a built in amplifier for those gamers with huge headphones that need some serious wattage.

-Fan Sound
One of my pet peeves when purchasing a laptop is the noise it may produce. I do not want to be distracted by the system, especially if I'm up late or stressed out working on a paper and find myself easily distracted. For example, I was temporarily using an HP laptop. The fan would continually spin up and idle down with no particular set speed. This was very annoying. Even while gaming, the fans remain relatively quiet. Compared to the Alienware 14 I had, this system is whisper quite given the Alienware had one fan for GPU/CPU while the Asus has two separate fans. For a powerhouse, this is one stealthily quite machine.

-Keyboard
I prefer the island style keyboard on the Asus for gaming since they are well differentiated and spaced while I preferred typing on the Alienware. The Alienware has a more traditional keyboard. However, while gaming, I would miss keystrokes on the Alienware, especially holding down the space bar which is required for a first person shooter I often play. The keys on the Asus are just as comfortable and more responsive during game play over the Alienware. The spacing also helps me to be more accurate while gaming than on the Alienware which as all of the keys side by side. Also worth noting is that the keyboard does not exhibit any flex. It is sturdy, comfortable, back-lit (variable brightness with white light) and comfy.

-Touch-pad
Not much to say other than it works well. Given its large size, I do brush up on it occasionally while typing. This is rare though, but worth noting. Overall, I'm glad that two touch for right click is offered and that the touch pad is consistent and responsive. I've had poor experiences with Asus ultrabooks in the past and I'm glad to say that did not carry over to the Asus g750. The buttons are responsive and the touch-pad does feel slightly plastic. It's smooth and serves its purpose.

-Ports and CD-ROM
It has an arsenal of all USB 3.0 ports (four total) with Asus's charging technology for when the system is powered off. It also has an Ethernet jack, HDMI, VGA, SD, thunderbolt, Mini-display port out, and separate microphone and headset jacks.

-Performance
If you are purchasing this system, it is likely because you are aware of the performance it offers. All I can do is confirm to you that this system does perform and I've had no issues regarding performance. The system has been able to handle every task I have been able to challenge it with.

-Wifi
This is one of the few laptops on the market to offer the new 802.11AC wifi card over the old 802.11N. It works great. However, at one point I did need to uninstall and re-install it because for some strange reason I was getting lag (ping spikes) while gaming on the 2.4ghz band. However, that didn't carry over to the 5ghz band. There was no interference with my wifi, I'm fairly confident it was a driver issue.

-Battery
I can comfortably get five to six hours of battery life on optimized settings and working on papers and browsing the internet with the screen brightness up at just over 1/4th brightness. This is insane and likely the longest battery life of any full feature gaming system. While it does not offer Nvidia's Optimus tech like the Alienware, it still outlasts it in battery life. Also, it is very important to know that this system has a changeable battery, while Alienware's are sealed inside the unit and not serviceable. My 14" Alienware had about 3.5 hours of battery life which wasn't really practical when away from the outlet. Now I have a larger system with longer battery life.

-Build Quality
The system is very sturdy all around. However, went through five of these systems (yes five ! ! !) Before getting one in acceptable condition. The other system all had something wrong with the left hinge cover being broken and or detached. I went through hoops to get an acceptable unit. However, Best Buy staff was great in assisting me! ! ! I went to three different stores. The first BB I went to, I opened the computer at the desk after purchasing it so I could check it for imperfections such as DOA or dead pixels. However, I never even powered the system up. I called the BB employee over and he was surprised to see the broken hinge. He personally did the return for me. I then went to Tiger Direct and the same thing. I then went to a different Best Buy the following day since the other one I went to only had one in stock. I told the sales rep that I had already purchased two of these G750s and returned them because of broken hinges (hinge cover; one had a broken hinge that made popping sounds.) I made my purchase and opened it at the counter. Sure enough, the BB sales rep and I looked at each other and had a good laugh. He said instead of going through the return process and getting my ID flagged for excessive returns, he would just open the units and check them with me since there was something seriously wrong. He stated there must have been a bad batch of shipments. So we opened another unit/laptop and then another. Finally the third one was mint with no cosmetic defects. I powered it on, the screen looked good and I was ready to head home and game the night away. I highly recommend you have a BB associate check this computer before leaving the store so you don't end up not being able to return it because they think you broke it. Overall, the system does have a sturdy build and I like the rubbery all matte finish. One negative about the build though is that this lid does not stay shut well while in transport; very unfortunate given that the overall build looks great. I really like the beefy and sleek exhaust ports in the back.

-Side Note (out of box quirks). I spent too much time on these issues and I hope this helps you solve them if they surface with you.

What I like most about this system is that it can be used in clamshell configuration. This is when the lid is closed and an external monitor, keyboard and mouse are used. You can also wake the system over the USB with the keyboard or mouse while it is hibernating/sleeping. Unfortunately, I was irked to find out that the 14" and 17" Alienware laptops didn't work well in clamshell configuration. You have to fully power up the unit with the lid open and then you can close it up into clamshell config and use it. However, if you restart the computer or put it in standby, you have to open up the laptop again. The Asus can be left in clamshell mode at all times unless you completely power it off. The Alienware not working well in clamshell config was a deal breaker for me. Thank goodness that Asus mostly got it right. While I prefer the build of the Alienware over the Asus, Asus got the design and price points right.
Musts! ! !

1-Uninstall the splendid utility and re-install it. It causes horizontal lines to appear on dark backgrounds.
2-increase the refresh rate using the Nvidia control panel from 60hz to 85hz. My screen seemed to blink at 60hz, which almost cause me to return it until I found a ROG forum where it was confirmed by Asus it was ok to increase the refresh rate of the screen and how to do it. There is also a youtube video on this.
3-If you exhibit out of place game lag on the 2.4ghz band, un-install and re-install the wifi driver. Both the Asus and Alienware expressed this strange problem. Possibly because it's the new 802.11AC and needed updated drivers?

The Perfect Combination of Brand, Power, & Style!

Considering how much there is to say about this laptop, I will simply get to the point. I haven't exactly pushed the limits on this beast yet but I can surely say to everyone I know or want to inform that this machine is the 2013 portable power house. Specs are constantly getting better and better by the day and technology is exponentially growing at a cool and "scary" rate. Regardless, I will talk about what improvements I did to the laptop rather than how cool it is.

The standard specs as given with the laptop are 1TB Seagate HD at 5400RPM (This means it is the slowest HD possible for an amazing machine)
12GB DDR3 Ram 1600mhz (This is fantastic! But I am hard core technician so I need 32GB!)

With the possibilities given, I took a stroll through Amazon and got these additional items:

1. 2 of Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10) (This allows for 32GB of Ram) = Amazon Warehouse Used Deal = $182 vs New price = $284. I got used to save $100 and no difference. It's used and returned. Big deal!

2. Samsung MZ-7TD250BW 840 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) 250 GB Sata 2.5-Inch (You will want SSD power for speed and joy!) = Amazon Warehouse Used Deal = $155 vs New price = $165. Saved $10.

So long story short, I managed to remove 21 screws from the bottom base of laptop (I would upload pictures I took since I had to do everything manually but Amazon disabled the option forever since July 15, 2013 because of some reason they claimed to me that "It didn't provide the community much use". Biggest bull I heard but regardless, took apart the base keyboard and hinges of screen, and had access to the "Hidden 2 RAM modules". Plugged in the new 8GB * 4 Modules, put everything back together and Boom! All set and ready to run! Installed the SSD last and I was on the way to victory!

From here I was then able to copy the entire 1TB HD using EaseUs ToDo backup and apply it to the SSD. After that, I formatted the 1TB HD to NTFS with MBR because MBR is still cool and friendly to much tech still out there where the new GPT is somewhat awesome but secretly "ugly".

I will now apply some useful data I acquired and compiled so please enjoy and make use of what I did! Yippie!

250GB SSD becomes = 232.89GB (Samsung SSD 840 Series) - 13.28GB (5 hidden partitions that come with windows 8 pre-installed "Recovery, Restore, System, Other System Reserved, and Unallocated" and only reduced size in "Restore" partition to save about 7GB) = 219.61GB remaining for the OS partition alone. 219.61GB (OS partition) - 56.87GB (Average size of the entire OS on an SSD drive with System Restore memory deleted/disabled, Virtual memory Disabled to "No Paging file size = 0MB", and CCleaner with Disk cleanup preformed) = 162.74GB Free Space for user to install programs, copy data to SSD, and simply free space alone.

Optionally the Free user space could be increased if useless programs are uninstalled like Asus software, or if the pre installed partitions are deleted like "Restore" partition which after being altered and reduced in size, still takes up 11.98GB. As far as I know, the restore partition is used to reset Windows 8 if the user is planning to sell the laptop or at least start back to factory settings as if the laptop was purchased brand new. It is a very useful function as the old methods of using a recovery disk are long gone but to some hardcore users, a restore is just pointless so this partition could be removed and nothing would be bricked or messed up. The only thing I experienced with removing it was when I select the format windows option through windows 8 OS, I would receive a "Unable to find recovery partition". Another method some can use is the ability to create a recovery usb with the "Restore" partition and then delete the partition after. The options are countless but depends on the users choice.

6 Total Partitions:

1. *Unallocated = 508.00 KB
2. *Other System Reserved = 128.00 MB
3. *Recovery = 900.00 MB

So with everything I have to say in a nutshell for those users reading and saying "W-T-F", I managed to take a machine like this and get a powerhouse with 32GB Ram at 1600Mhz, 250GB SSD with 162.74GB Free Space for whatever I want including OS installed, a 1TB HD with 931.51GB free space for any data, pictures, you name it, and the standard i7 processor which everyone has by default with this model machine and wola!

Price Paid Clean:

Machine: $1369.99
32GB: $182
250GB SSD: $155

= $1,542.99 Spent. Comparing to other model laptops out there, this is the best custom price possible as of now. (Of course building a desktop with this money would have been superior but I need portability and style. This will be my college laptop so I need the fluid movement.

If anything else I should mention, I also bought this.

1. Mobile Edge Alienware Orion ScanFast Checkpoint Friendly 17.3-Inch Backpack (Fits perfectly for laptop! I still love Alienware products but I go with what the wallet wants and can afford to eat. Besides, this 2013 year model laptops for Alienware got me upset. They are looking more professional business like rather than *atmospheric galactic outer space feeling* like)

Rule of thumb, If you are looking for a decent laptop to do everything todays society asks in programming, editing, videos, ect, and want brand then get this laptop. You don't need my given upgrades but It helps for those total geek heads.

If you love Alienware or LED lights on laptops but need to conserve $ like me all the time, buy an Alienware used or buy this instead (MSI G Series GE70 2OE-017US 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black/Red)

Save $100 off the Asus brand name and get better MSI sound quality, led color keyboard, 7200RPM HD, Bluray Disk Drive, and Somewhat Faster Wi-Fi Card.

I have said enough. Time is money so go and compare reviews, do your homework, and make a decision already for what laptop you want! Hurry! I done all I could to help recommend and make tips! Go Go GO!

*** UPDATE: *** 08-15-13

For all users with SSD's or any laptop in general! Helpful tips to save data! If you don't use Hibernation mode, Disable that! Saves you about 10-24GB off the bat! Depends on your pc or HD but to do this follow my words:
Simply run "CMD" as Admin and copy and paste this line in the black box "powercfg -h off".

In seconds you will have more data on the hard drive! Helpful for SSD users! Here is s a link with more info:

Tip #2: I recently noticed in the beginning that my laptop was acting strange with updates and super long restarts and even infinite restart loops! To fix this issue:

1. Click Start then type CMD into the search area to locate the command prompt (cmd.exe).
2. RIGHT CLICK the command prompt icon and choose "Run As Administrator" - you must have administrator rights.
3. In the command prompt type in "sfc /scannow"
4. Do something productive for about 15 Minutes or so and then return to laptop until it is complete.
5. Restart your computer.
6. Update restart issues should be no more.

*** UPDATE: *** 08-31-13

Laptop still runs like a pro and no issues what so ever. I want to continue to mention that I noticed that Nvidia had released a Video driver update for the laptop for Nvidia Driver 320.49. If you attempt to update this by simply downloading the driver through the Nvidia update procedure, you will get a failure message saying "Compatiable Hardware not found". To counter this issue, go to the official Asus website, Type in G750 J, look under downloads, and download the latest LAN driver. This will then fix the issue with the Nvidia software temporarily. According to multiple users, the Nivida update 320.49 has caused countless issues so until a fix is made, patience is required. Took a while to find out why this wasn't working but common sense brought me to explore and resolve :) Enjoy users!

*** UPDATE: *** 09-19-13

If you haven't already, maybe it's been fixed without this method, but Nvidia seems to have fixed the issue retaining to the strange unable to find hardware update "Compatiable Hardware not found". If you have't already, update your Nvidia GPU to the latest driver by first installing the latest LAN driver for the G750 on the Asus website and through that, updating the GPU to(327.23). Things are smooth as butter cake :)

Good, but not without its flaws

I've had this laptop for about a week now and have generally been happy with it, though with a couple of caveats. First impression on unboxing: this thing is HUGE! It's both large and heavy, neither of which particularly bothers me (and of course, I saw the 9.9lb weight going in). Next, ergonomics: with the weird games that other manufacturers are playing with laptop keyboards right now, it's refreshing to see one that touches smoothly and ergonomically. It's still not as comfortable as my desktop keyboard, but I can at least see myself coding away for days at a time (as is my wont) without developing carpal tunnel syndrome.

The keyboard includes a separate set of arrow keys in the standard shape used on desktops, which makes me very happy, as I use these keys very often.

The external finish is kind of blocky, but when you open it up, it's gorgeous, with a very nice brushed aluminum look that unfortunately smudges very easily. As the other poster said, you're going to get fingerprints on it; it's inevitable. Heck, it even smudges on its own when it gets a little bit humid out. This laptop has a matte display, which I find does a much better job of reducing glare than my previous glossy laptop display, at the expense of gamut width (nevertheless, I was able to get a ~90% overlap with sRGB on mine, so it's not bad). There does seem to be a minor issue with the refresh rate of the display: it seems just a tad off of 60Hz, as refreshes are very slightly visible against solid colors (dark gray in particular). This seems to be accentuated when the backlight is dim and is much less noticeable when the laptop is plugged in and the backlight is at full brightness. This is something that I can live with; you might consider it more serious if you're particularly prone to eyestrain. Make sure to uninstall the bundled Splendid software if you have color issues, as it had a detrimental effect on color for me which was resolved by removing it.

Performance-wise, this thing is a beast, limited primarily by its 5400 RPM hard drive. Which brings me to one of the reasons why I purchased this particular laptop (incurring the weight and bulk): it has two 2.5" hard drive bays. I loaded an SSD (Crucial m500) into the 2nd bay and it found it without a problem. I haven't tried it yet, but copying the OS over to the SSD and using the old HD as a backup drive should result in a *substantial* performance improvement, as the hard drive was the primary bottleneck.

The graphics card isn't quite up to desktop levels either (but then, laptops seldom are), but it's quite capable of running most of today's games. It's also CUDA-enabled, so I can run Fast Fourier Transforms on it to my heart's content.

Power consumption is quite good considering the specs, an area where the Haswell processor clearly makes a difference. I can get about 4-5 hours of use from a full charge. I haven't noticed a substantial boost in raw computing power over Ivy Bridge just yet, but I haven't yet challenged the limits of this machine.

The DVD-ROM drive is nothing special, and I may simply replace it with the Blu-ray recorder from my previous laptop. This seems a larger trend right now - the last 5 years have seen a regression in optical drives, as USB flash memory is becoming more and more popular. Speaking of that, this laptop has a built in SD card reader.

If you want to get on the cutting edge of Wifi, this also has an 802.11ac network adapter, so you're all ready.

Overall, I'm rather pleased with the laptop - the slow drive speed and minor display refresh problems being the primary drawbacks. I would recommend it.

Great laptop for its price

After several days of getting to know the laptop, I decided to write a review. I apologize for the lengthy review, but there was no way I could just put in a few sentences for a large purchase such as this.

First of all, I'd like to say that the price point for this laptop is amazingly good. Sure, it could have been cheaper, but you'd lose all of the features it had!

Performance wise, it's a great laptop. It dynamically adjusts the clock speeds depending on the load, meaning you'll save a lot of battery. I've seen it run as low as 700 MHz, and I've seen it go all the way up to 3400 MHz The Haswell processor handles it very well, resulting in a very little loss of performance even when you leave it idling and decide to start opening up programs.
When you need the performance, you can expect it with this laptop.

Now moving on to the graphics part - The included NVIDIA GTX 765M is nothing to scoff at. Granted, it's a laptop, so you shouldn't expect it to perform as well as a gaming desktop. For all intents and purposes, this card will run everything you need at 1080p in medium to high settings, or sometimes ultra settings! I was able to play several games in 1080p ranging from medium to ultra settings with an absolute minimum of 60 fps.
NVIDIA Optimus is another cool thing on this laptop, it will automatically determine which graphics processor to use. When you want battery life, you can set it so that it'll run on Intel's integrated graphics unit. However, when you want the performance, it'll switch over to the NVIDIA GTX 765M. You can actually see which mode the laptop is running on based on the color of the power button's LED. Blue for integrated, Orange for NVIDIA.
Of course, you can always override this and set it to permanently use integrated graphics or NVIDIA graphics. If needed, you can also configure each program individually to run on integrated graphics or NVIDIA graphics.

I have to comment about the keyboard. When I looked at the pictures, I was concerned that some buttons were cut short (Such as Right Shift, Enter, and Backspace buttons), but after handling the laptop, it proved that it was of no issue. The backlighting, while it didn't look anything like in the pictures, was still decent. It was sufficiently bright, and there was 3 modes. The first 2 modes being on/off, and the third being half lit. Apparently the purpose of this was to illuminate only the keys you'd use during gaming.
The keyboard itself was a pleasure to type on, sharp enough to receive feedback, but soft enough to have that cushioned feel. Also as an added bonus, the wrist area (the space below the keyboard) stays very cool even while playing games!

The display is perfect, there was no dead pixels. Excellent quality and color. The viewing angles are wide enough for me, so I don't have anything to complain here.

The battery life on this laptop is good, but not amazing. I haven't really tested it in different scenarios though. However, at full brightness, I was able to watch a 2 hour long movie before it died. However, I would expect the battery life to dramatically increase when you reduce the brightness and do less intensive tasks.

The temperatures are decent, idling at around 40-45c for the processor and the graphics card. I did run a prime95 stress test, as I wanted to see how hot the processor could get. The CPU did go up to 93c, but did not go beyond that. I don't expect the CPU to get this hot with normal usage or even gaming for that matter. The GPU ran considerably cooler than the CPU though. The hottest temperature I've ever seen it reach was at around 75c.

Now, moving on to the cons:
- Even though I know that this is a gaming laptop, the battery life could have been better. I'm really surprised that they only put a 6-Cell battery in this laptop. It was probably to maintain the slim form factor, but still, I feel like this is something they could have improved on.

- The USB 3.0 ports are finicky. On the first USB 3.0 port, it would only perform at USB 2.0 speeds, on the other port, it'll perform at USB 3.0 speeds, but disconnect constantly (USB 2.0 devices doesn't disconnect however). A firmware update fixed the USB 2.0 speeds, but it also switched ports I was having issues with, so the first port is now having the disconnections, while the second one works flawlessly. I suspect that this is a firmware issue, and might be fixed at a later date. However, it's not a big issue. It seems like a common problem, not with MSI products, but with USB 3.0 in general.
Also, on Amazon's product description page, it said that there was 3 USB 3.0 ports and 2 USB 2.0 ports. This is incorrect, there are only *2* USB 3.0 ports.

- The "Cooler Boost" function on this laptop barely did anything. It might have knocked the temperatures down by 1 or 2 degrees, but nothing to be amazed about.

- This thing attracts a lot of fingerprints. The area below the keyboard, and on the sides of the keyboard, and the lid all attract fingerprints.

Considering the positive aspects of this laptop, coupled with few (very) minor annoyances, this is a great laptop for the money. I would suggest this notebook to anyone who's looking for a laptop that has the performance of a desktop, and the portability of a laptop.

Incredible Laptop

This laptop is amazing! Super fast, looks great, solid build. I have been using 17" HD laptops for years and this is the best I have ever used. I bought an miniPCI-E SSD card and used Acronis to move the system image over to it and now it boots SUPER-FAST! The only issues I originally had were figuring out how to scroll with the touch pad. It's like a Macbook, you use two fingers and drag in the reverse direction you want to scroll. Took me forever to figure it out, but it works great. I also couldn't figure out how to force the video card to be the Geforce versus the Intel HD one, so the Windows Experience Index was pretty low (comparatively) until I went in to the Nvidia control panel and changed the 3D default settings. Then, it was zooming (though, no real need for it to always use discrete graphics, so I switched it back).

In the end, everything is great. I love the separate button for the illuminated keyboard and another for the "cooling down mode" which amps up the fans and lowers the laptop temp by 10 or so degrees.

The keyboard feels great. The touchpad is huge and works well (after getting used to it) and there is VERY little bloatware. The MSI utility for creating boot discs also works great (I created a USB key and 4xDVDs).

If you're in the market for a 1200.00-1300.00 performance laptop this is the one.

The screen is beautiful as is the chassis. All around, the best laptop I've ever had.

Mid-High Range gaming Laptop, Packs a Punch for an Amazing Price

What can I say, the price you pay for the amount of features, specs and overall quality that you get out of this laptop is just unbeatable. Its no wonder I couldn't find this laptop at Microcenter, Bestbuy, or anywhere else; and they were selling like hotcakes online. Its amazing.

I'll go through the pros and cons (very few) of this beauty.
Pros:
- 17.3 Inch Screen running Natively at 1920x1080 (1080P). The Anti-Glare and Anti-Reflective work as advertised.
- i7 Generation 4 Technology, boy its fast.
- SteelSeries Mechanical Keyboard BUILT-IN to this laptop (with light-up keys) (Detection speed is amazing. Also has a Turbo-Fan button which pushes heat out quickly from the inner-workings.
- 2 USB 3.0 ports for your fast external drives & 2 more USB 2.0 ports for other devices.
- Quallcomm Killer Network Manager included with this laptop (keeps you lag and Packet-loss free)
- 12 Gigs of RAM (Multitasking galore) + Adobe Premiere Pro and Cinema 4D work without any lag
- Discrete Graphics (GTX 765M) (Plays everything on high with great frame-rates (60+), plays a few games on Ultra with 60+ frames, but most with acceptable frames (30~45FPS))
- VGA & HDMI out for multiple TVs, resolutions and devices.
- Bluetooth Syncing with Mobile Devices and Storage
- 750Gigs of space (Partitioned into 500Gigs for System and 250 for a data partition) (@7200 RPM vs 5800RPM). Included with IntelRapidStorage Technology which actually makes the drive perform closer to a 10,000RPM level than 7200.
- Cools well, even without a Cooling Pad (though I'm still getting one)
- No bloatware (Useless or advertising programs that take up space, memory and are annoying)
- BluRay Combo Drive (How could they do this at $1,300?)

Cons:
- No Solid State Drive; SSD. (Would improve performance greatly). If you are proficient at computers, I would suggest purchasing a 128GB SSD and installing it into this laptop, then cloning the system partition to it. It will make this laptop blazingly fast. I'm thinking of doing this myself soon. If you don't know how to do it, and you'd really like the performance out of an SSD, ask your local tech at one of the big stores to do it for you. Its worth the cost.
- Windows 8 64-Bit (I'm getting used to it, but still prefer 7)
- Low Battery Life (2.5 Hours). Its a gaming laptop though, so its to be expected. Tip: If you want your battery to maintain its maximum performance, disconnect it after its fully charged if you don't have to go anywhere with your laptop. The laptop runs fine without a battery if its plugged in.

The battery is fine for around the house and a short trip somewhere. Otherwise, if you want to go out and game, bring your charger. If you have the need for long battery life and mobile gaming on-the-go, go ahead and get a Razer Edge Pro.

For this price, there are surprisingly few cons with some very high quality parts and software included. MSI did a great job bringing together one of the best multi-manufacturer laptop builds I have ever seen. It looks sleek, it feels sleek and it runs quick and light (software wise and literally). I'd say build a desktop if you don't really need everything to be all-in-one, but the fact remains that its a very tempting buy. You could build only a little better desktop for the same amount of money ($1,300).

Update (08/07/2013):

Before you take this update harshly, let me say that I still think this laptop is very well made, works well, and is extremely high quality for an attractive price. If I could, I would buy it again. There are just a few issues that need to be addressed to make it perfect.

After a few days with this laptop, figuring out all the little nuances, there are a few minor things that you should do to have it running optimally for games. Because of this, I have lowered my rating to four stars. This takes away from the ease-of-use, which otherwise would make it 5 stars.

MSI should update their system image for their Killer E2200 drivers.

#1: Be sure that you always have the Power Options set to High Performance. Otherwise, this laptop WILL throttle the graphics card. I can't tell you how many times I've thought that something was wrong with the graphics card because of laggy games, only to discover that I had the Power Options on Power Saver. Also, make sure that the laptop is PLUGGED IN with the charger. The graphics card will throttle heavily otherwise. This makes high-end mobile gaming on the battery impossible.

#2: When you first get the laptop, uninstall the Qualcomm Killer E2200 Software, and get an official update for "Embedded Ethernet" for Windows 8 64-Bit from their official website: www.killergaming.com. This is simple and easy. The current driver that shipped with this image causes a blue screen at times. This will fix that issue.

#3: Buy a Laptop Cooling Pad. I'm not fully sure that its necessary, but I think it would contribute to the overall health and longevity of this system. It DOES have a high-end, heat producing card and processor in it, and at times it does seem to get pretty hot. The cooling pad I use (Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim Ultra-Slim Laptop Cooling Pad) has helped keep the heat just coming out of the vents where its supposed to.

Because of the blue-screen and having to have the laptop plugged in to play any high end games, and a possibility of needing a cooling pad, I've lowered my rating to 4 stars. That isn't to say those 3 things took away from this laptop, I don't mind plugging it in to play high end games or having a cooling pad, or even fixing a bluescreen issue, but for others understanding of this product that its not quite a mobile gaming laptop and it does have an issue with a driver that causes system failure, and that it could overheat, I must lower the rating.

Amazing machine!

This laptop is everything you'd expect from a high-end gaming laptop. From inside to outside, all features and components have been designed for top notch gaming performance.
This particular model utilizes Intel's latest CPU- the 4th generation i7 8 Core processor which packs more processing potential than most users will ever need.
This model is loaded with 16 gigabytes of DDR3 RAM and is upgradable to 32 gigabytes. This is more RAM than most games will recommend for system requirements.
The GPU is Nvidia's latest mobile model- the GeForce GTX 770m. Packing 3 gigabytes of super fast GDDR5 dedicated VRAM this bad boy will push high frame rate benchmarks even under high graphical settings. Some games will drop significantly in frame rates under super max video settings due to poor game run engines but I have never been happier with graphics performance since purchasing this laptop. This system also comes equipped with a super cooling feature at the push of a button. The fan system will kick into high gear and DROP temperatures of the CPU and GPU to extremely admirable levels making this laptop very versatile. This mobile GPU is second only to the GeForce GTX 780m which is Nvidia's top GPU model.
Three USB 3.0 slots. Two USB 2.0. Top of the line networking adapters for WiFi, LAN etc... The keyboard is the new SteelSeries with a customizable backlit keyboard that may be adjusted at the touch of a button. I have to stress how comfortable and responsive this keyboard is. I have never type so fast on another keyboard. The keyboard on this laptop is truly a wonder in and of itself.
The sound system is remarkable. Three speakers- left, right and bottom. Crisp and clear sound. No crackling or muffling. Even has some bass to it. The sound system is the best you can get for laptops. You won't be disappointed.
THE ONE FLAW...
This particular model comes with only a 7200RPM HDD. It has an open bay to add a solid state drive which will greatly increase performance when and if you upgrade. The system comes with a mounting bracket specifically for this SSD upgrade. It will be located inside the box with the power supply in a sealed bag. Windows will score this laptop at a very insulting 5.9 due to the HDD being the lowest sub score. The processor and memory score a whopping 7.9 and the graphics/gaming graphics score a very nice 7.1. Once upgraded, this laptop will score an all around 7.1.
Buyers will be pleased nonetheless. I am so happy with this system.

Almost perfect!

Got it about 3 weeks ago

Quite powerful. I can use it for both development and gaming.

The sound system can be set to much more louder level than it was in my previous laptop -- HP TouchSmart (which is good if you are going to watch movies without headphones).

Only one thing that seemed not to be perfect -- I can clearly hear HDD and other electronic noises in my headphones, so consider buying external USB sound card if you like listening to music and have a good pair of headphones.

Great performance value

Had this about a week and with exception of Windows 8 (not an MSI issue) I'm very impressed and happy. Quality feel; doesn't feel plastic and cheap. Keybaord is responsive and quiet. Backlighting is nice as it helps in low light situations. Screen and display is crisp and bright at 50% brightness. Battery charge is decent if the Nvida GPU isn't engaged. Runs quiet as well but when the fan revs up under load it will be noticed; louder than most desktops I think.

I've only run into 2 issues and potential issue, which I haven't yet figured out: 1) Nvida drivers won't update, 2) Sims 3 will not run. On 1), the driver update will start to Install then fail due to not finding "compatible hardware". Everything seems to be working with Nvida graphics; Device manager shows its working properly, Nvida driver website recognizes the GPU and recommends the driver update. Running it or saving it and then running it locally results in the same error.
On 2) the game loads fine but when it enters game mode from a typical install and game updates from launch console, Windows displays a messages that it had problems and is terminating the TS3 program. Made recommended adjustments the DEP and then game goes into "game mode" but then blacks out". Sometimes get a popup saying TS3.exe has been prohibited from accessing graphics hardware. Only way out is hard reboot. The kids weren't happy but I uninstalled the program and will continue to look for a solution. THe potential issue deals with the BD burner not always recognizing a disc I load. SOmetimes I'll have to open and close the drive several times before it will recognize its loaded and display in Explorer.

Win 8 is just a terrible interface for laptop/desktop use. Not efficient at all. Some movements from the mouse or touchpad will take you from your app or desktop window to the tile window. Just very annoying.
If you don't want a big and heavy laptop then don't buy this. The physical specs are pretty true; it's big, barely fits in my Victronoix messenger which is for most 17" laptops. The power unit is also big and heavy. It's 180W supply so be ready.

As described [Update!!]

I got this laptop about 8 hours ago, and I love it. Let me break it down.

Pros:
Powerful (not top of the line, but powerful) gaming machine
Everything runs smooth
Big, bright screen
Comfortable keyboard
Cooling boost

Cons:
Windows 8
Small left shift key

Everything is pretty much self explanatory here.
I played Tera on it for about 3 hours, and it didn't even start to get as hot as my other laptop, which turns into a lava pit at the mere mention of "Netflix." Didn't even have to use the cooling boost option, which is fantastic by the way.
Overall, I'm happy. I'll update if anything goes wrong, but I doubt it will.

Edit: It is now Day 2. I noticed that the charger gets incredibly hot when used for a few hours. My old laptop didn't do that, though my old laptop didn't game, either. Not sure how bad this is, but its something to keep in mind. Also, the cooling boost option is fantastic. The laptop would probably die without it.

Edit: It's been a while since i got this laptop, but less than a month. I haven't dropped it or treated it with anything less than the utmost care, and now when i rest my hand on the bottom right corner of the laptop, it makes a clicking noise, as though something came loose. I am not sure if this is serious, or if it will lead to more serious problems, but i am disappointed.

[Update!] Its been less than a year (I think) since I bought this laptop,and the motherboard has failed. Fantastic. Not sure if my unit was just defective, or if they're all like that, but I'm now left with a $1000 brick.
UPDATE UPDATE. So, the problem was with the multicontroller. Essentially, the power board broke. I got it fixed and everything is fine now, but its still kind of shady that this happened.

Quality Gaming Laptop

I purchased the MSI GE60 about 2 and a half weeks ago and have yet to find a complaint about it. It's truly lived up to its expectations as a gaming laptop! Here are a few things about this laptop I find worthy of mention.

Exterior Surfaces:

Sleek finish on the casing makes the laptop appear much more professional than other gaming laptops, which I find to be a plus. The wrist resting surface on the inside is comfortable and doesn't get hot with the laptop (which doesn't happen much!)

Monitor:

A standard 1920x1080 pixel resolution display on a 15.6" screen makes the picture clear at a very close viewing distance. Something deceptive about the larger laptops is that they can actually spread out the pixels on the larger screen when they have the same resolution display making the image appear worse when you're at the close distance you'd expect to have in a laptop. The screen is exceptionally bright (moreso than my last laptop) and I haven't experienced any glare on the screen from artificial or sun light. Viewable at a wide range of viewing angles as well.

Keyboard:

To my surprise the keyboard has a full numberpad which was an adjustment but definitely a plus for me in the long run. However, this pushed the arrow keys into the right shift key which makes it a bit small. There's also no "function" key on the right side of the keyboard, requiring two hands to adjust the volume or screen brightness. The keyboard by SteelSeries (great gaming accessory company; I ordered a mouse pad from them a few months back) feels very sharp and precise with key presses and has a satisfying weight to each key. The LED illumination is different for me, but it happens to match the LEDs in my mouse :P For some reason there's a 2nd LED setting that illuminates only the far left side of the keyboard (probably for the standard gaming keys of WASD ZXCV etc)

Touchpad:

Responsive, logical usage, perhaps a little *too* sensitive to taps as I've accidentally clicked while trying to use it. A bit of a negative is the inability (at least for me) to use the mousepad while a USB mouse is plugged in. Probably a feature, but to me seems illogical.

Cooler Booster or whatever it's called:

What a great feature!! If you just wanna keep your laptop cooled even further with regular use, push the button to turn it on and away goes the heat! It says 15% cooling increase but the heat it pumps out from the side is amazing with it on! Big plus!

Processor:

i7 processor is of course the greatest of Intel right now. 2.4 GHz isn't laughable, but when you can overclock to 3.3 GHz without any adverse effects (or even extra heat!!) it's pretty amazing especially on a laptop of this size. Remarkably fast processor that has drastically reduced load times. As an avid League of Legends player, I went from the last to load in, to the first to load in every time.

Nvidia Geforce Graphics Card:

I still haven't figured out how to manually switch between the intel graphics chip and the nvidia card, but automatic settings have worked fabulously. Any game I launch, I immediately go into settings and crank everything up to max. Everything I've ran runs at 60 FPS stable still. 2 GB of graphics memory is huge. Great to have on a laptop!! I'm curious how it would run something like BF3 but I don't own it :/

Sound Blaster Cinema:

WOW this laptop has some sound behind it. Comparable to leading sound systems for laptops this thing packs quite the punch. Max volume is WAYYYY too loud for any setting. The Sound Blaster settings make sounds in music, movies, and games (separate settings for each type) sound as they should with crystal sound quality. Huge bonus to have as well.

Killer Network Manager:

I don't know what it does still. I've actually suspected that it unfairly shares download bandwidth and hogs it to a single application (for example I couldn't watch Youtube at all because my other downloads were running at my max download speed). When I opened the application, hardly anything was displayed and there were only like two settings for me that did nothing. I think being on wireless has prevented a lot of this feature from working. Wired connections may experience something different. I haven't found any latency improvements in game (if anything my ping has gone up)

Battery Life:

Seems good to me. Have to remember to stay at 2.4 GHz on the processor because 3.3 will destroy the battery very quickly!! I'd say you could get 3-4 hours of movie watching on a single charge with medium brightness.

Windows 8:

It's certainly different. And designed for a tablet which is kinda dumb for a computer with a mouse... But I hardly use the start screen anyway. The Desktop can run everything on its own. I only used the start screen the first day to test out all the smart apps (which are a bit slow for my taste and have a terrible graphical layout) and install google chrome from Internet Explorer.

Quality for Price:

I paid $1199 when I purchased it. For this price, this laptop was an excellent buy for me. At retail price, maybe not such a great deal, but still a quality laptop that will offer all the power you could want or need for gaming. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a high end gaming laptop.

No, its not the coolest design and high quality aluminum notebook. Yes, it does heat up a bit on the left front side. But, yes, it's a light notebook that boots in less than 10 secs and performs like a beast !!! Windows 8 is not as bad as reviewers say. It's actually pretty cool once you get used to it. If you are seeking a high performing light notebook, this is a very good choice.
